Scones
Dry. Brittle. Crumbly. Four bucks at Starbucks. People try to put fruit in them but the fruit just ends up tasting like those red and green things that people put in fruit cake. Which would be another thing that is overrated, if anyone rated it highly to begin with.
Scones remind me of bland, tasteless, lifeless diet food but scones are worse. They taste bad, make you incredibly thirsty and they are fattening. Sound like a game plan? I’ll meet you at Fourbucks for a cup of coffee and an orange/cranberry scone OR I can drop an anvil on your big toe and take $8.45 out of your wallet. What do you choose? Hey, if you take the anvil route, you’ll be $8.45 ahead of the game, thinner and even with a swollen big toe you’ll be able to cover enough ground at short-stop to be compared to Cal Ripken.

I’ll give you that Starbucks scones are over-rated. However, this mediocre observation is a good starting point for the blog.
However while we’re at it, lets talk about starbucks in general…I mean how much does it actually cost to put a cup of coffee in front of a customer? I know that they pay just over a dollar a pound for coffee hich included shipping and taxes from central america.
Aren’t they really presenting a “high-end” coffee when in actual fact it is just another cup of coffee with some additional ingredients that cover its natural taste which is just coffee? The funny thing is that society accepts the cost and claims “high-end” to explain the over paying. I give star bucks coffee a much higher level of over-rating than singling out the other bad peripheral products that they offer.
OK, I am with you… I do not understand how or why people eat scones. Give me an apple fritter or pretty much anything from Dunkin Donuts anytime
Ok, I’ll give you Starbucks. They’re over-priced and their coffee isn’t even very good – tastes like they puposely burn it. Then, they try to be all friendly by finding out your name and if you go there enough they remember it. Why would I want to be friendly and actually speak to someone before I have my coffee.
Scones on the other hand…. I think I would agree with you if my wife didn’t make them homemade. Scones are like soup – they’re much better homemade. They also have to be fresh out of the oven. And they have to be made right, or they turn out much like you described. So, I’ll give you Starbucks Scones and most others you buy at stores, but scones made by someone who knows what they’re doing – that ’s a different story altogether.
I should have learned not to mess with Simone Roy as a I received a FedEx box this morning filled with pretty fresh scones. With the knowledge that she is more resourceful, intelligent and perhaps stubborn than I am, it almost makes me reluctant to post the inevitable “library post” which, of course, I will be unable to avoid doing.
Thanks, Simone, for the scones… and I will have to visit to have scones fresh from the oven before they turn dry and crumbling (if that is possible) on my next visit to New England.
There’s no way my wife is more stubborn than you. Besides that’s not really her motivation in this – more than anything, she’s incredibly competitve and therefore must have the last word in everything.
